SEO Basics | What You Need To Know

SEO basics (Search Engine Optimization basics) is a method of fine tuning your website so that it works better with search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. When your website is search engine optimized correctly, it becomes more visible in search engines, resulting in more visitors to your website and more sales profit. Here are some SEO tips for you that give you great results.

Many people consider organic traffic (traffic that comes from search engine searches) to be the most effective and important way to get targeted buyers to your webpage. If you aren’t using SEO basics, you may be missing out on one of the most important parts of Internet Marketing!

SEO Basics | The Big Myth

Most people learning SEO basics and trying to make money online think that traffic is the most important thing. The more visitors you get to your website, the more sales you will make, right? Wrong!

Traffic alone is not the key to online success and not the key to making money online. You could easily get 1000s of visitors and no sales. This is because you need the RIGHT traffic. You can’t just get traffic from anywhere. It needs to be targeted traffic full of people willing to BUY (not just browse) your product. These are search engine optimization basics.

SEO Basics | The Key Behind Traffic And SEO

Number one in SEO tips! The key behind getting targeted traffic from Google are keywords and links. Keywords play a huge part in SEO. When you fine tune a website for SEO, what you are doing is inserting targeted keywords into certain spots in the website. If done right, when someone searches for that keyword or keyword phrase in Google (e.g. “how to toilet train a puppy”), your website can show up on the first page of search results.

What does this mean? It means you get more exposure because you are on the first Google page for that search result, which means heaps of clicks from targeted people, which therefore leads to your desired result: more buyers and more profit.

So in summary, your very first step in search engine optimization basics is to find the right keyword/s that can potentially draw in quality, targeted traffic. Remember, a non-targeted keyword that produces 1000s of visitors but no interest in your product is useless. Once you have your keywords, you then insert them into the right spots in your website (I’ll talk about that in another post). Once that is done, the next step is to create (or buy) backlinks surrounding that keyword to boost your website to page one of Google for that particular keyword (I’ll also talk about that in another post, for now, you need to find your keyword/s first as a first step in SEO basics).

SEO Basics | How To Find The Right Keywords

How do you find the right keywords? Your first step is to use the Google Keyword Tool. Type in a phrase relating to a product and it will give you lots of related suggestions as well as how many people search for that particular keyword phrase every month.

Finding the RIGHT keyword to target and use in SEO basics is a little trickier and the best way to do it is to use a keyword tool software. Using a keyword research tool will save you several (if not more) hours looking for the perfect keywords to target. They automatically show you the stats for many different relevant keywords and help you decide on which ones to use, giving you great SEO tips. I use keyword research tools and highly recommend you do the same if you are serious about making money online or driving traffic to your website. Some keyword tools even have extra features to show you exactly what you need to do to outrank your competing sites.

So, before you do anything else, find some targeted, relevant keywords! I hope these SEO tips helped. Congratulations, that’s the first thing you need to know in SEO basics.

SEO Basics | 1. Headings

This is part 2 of SEO Basics (Search Engine Optimization Basics). Once you have found your keywords, you need to put them into your website. The following seo tips are what I recommend doing:

Put your main keyword phrase (the main one you want to rank well in search engines) into your headings. The most important heading is your first one, the H1 tag. If you are using a WYSIWYG (“What You See Is What You Get”) website editor, highlight the text that is set to be your title and make sure the formatting for that text is set to Heading 1 (H1), not Paragraph.

For any other headings, also include your main keyword and set them to Heading 2 (H2) and Heading 3 (H3). I recommend at least two H2s and at least one H3. If you aren’t using these SEO basics your website is in trouble!

SEO Basics |  2. Your Content

The content of your webpage should contain your keywords scattered throughout. This includes both your main keywords and related or similar keywords. The ratio of keywords contained within the total number of indexable words within a webpage is referred to as keyword density. The recommended keyword density can vary from search engine to search engine but it is generally advised to have a keyword density of 3-7%.

When doing SEO basics, your most important keywords should be the most frequently used keywords on the page. However, it is important not to overdo it, and your webpage content should still make perfect sense to the human eye! Your keyword must be in the first sentence and the last sentence of the webpage content.

Once your content contains your keywords, the next step is to bold one of your main keywords, underline one and put one in italics.

Lastly, make sure the images on the webpage have an alt tag (this is the text that appears when you hover the mouse over an image) containing your main keyword phrase. The next step in SEO Basics is putting in your links.

SEO Basics | 3. Links

Linking is the next of our seo tips. Using another one of the keywords written in your content, link it to an external authority site. For example, if your website is about dog training and your keyword is ‘dog training’, link the phrase ‘dog training’ to a Wikipedia article on the same subject. The link should be a “no follow” link for extra SEO points. To do this, make sure the HTML for your link looks something like this: <a href=”http://www.thesite.com” rel=”nofollow”>The Site</a>

After that, the next step in SEO basics is to link yet another one of your keywords in the content body to another page that is within your own website. For example, a page on your website with more information or the contact page.

SEO Basics | 4. Extra Bits and Pieces

These are some more seo tips for search engine optimization basics. Other things that will help your search engine ranking for a particular keyword is making sure that the keyword is contained within your website’s URL. A website targeting the keyword ‘dog training’ may have a URL such as:

dogtraining.com

dog-training.com

dogtrainingx.com

dogtrainingsite.com

dogtraining.net

The main keyword should also appear in the title tag (this is the text you see that appears in the window tab when the website is opened). Make sure it is also in your meta description (the body of text that shows up in search engine results under your website’s title).

To add additional oomph, SEO basics include having a privacy policy page on your webpage and a Google XML site map.

And that’s how you do on-page search engine optimization basics! The next step is to make sure that other web pages link to your website. These are called backlinks. The more (or higher quality) backlinks you have, the more relevant your website is regarded and it will climb up the ranks on search engines. As long as the text link (called anchor text) leading to your webpage is actually your keyword phrase that you are targeting.

It is extremely important that despite fine tuning your website for SEO, that you make sure the site is still enjoyable for people to read! The last thing you want is a website packed with keywords with no proper sentences anywhere to be found. I hope you enjoyed this lesson in SEO basics.
